Abstract: This article discusses the need to ensure you look at ALL areas around a fire scene, paying particular attention to the role that the roof or areas above the fire might have played in the fire. As an example, the author asks if what appears to be an obvious flammable liquids pour pattern on the floor was, instead, caused by something from above melting and dripping down on the floor, as mentioned in NFPA 921, Guide to Fire and Explosion Investigations.

The role that a roof fire might play in fire spread is something to be considered.

The classification of a fire scene as "suspicious" versus "incendiary" is also covered.
